Pre-Alpha
This lesson is in the pre-alpha phase, which means that it is in early development, but has not yet been taught.
Summary and Setup
This lesson runs three kernels under Slurm. AXPY and the dot product
have a hybrid MPI and OpenMP program. Matrix multiplication is
sequential, and you parallelise the outer loop yourself.
This lesson is adapted from Introducción a la
Supercomputación by José Luis Bosque, Borja Pérez, Ramón Beivide,
and Carmen Martínez, Universidad de Cantabria, by the EuroCC NL team at
SURF. License: CC-BY 4.0. The names are also in AUTHORS and
CITATION.cff.
Prerequisite
You need a terminal on Snellius or the course cluster. Copy
episodes/files/hands-on/ to the cluster and submit from the
exercise directory. The scripts compile the .c file in the
current directory.
Sign in to the SURF user portal before the first SSH login.
BASH
ssh YOUR_LOGIN@snellius.surf.nl
The portal is https://portal.cua.surf.nl/. If the network is not
trusted, the welcome mail names a door node. Use that host instead.
The course cluster is a SURF Research Cloud workspace. The login
address is the one in the welcome note. The trainer’s setup link sets
the password. There is no CUA account.
module load 2025 selects the 2025 software stack on
Snellius. In the EESSI client container, which has no site module named
2025, source the init script instead:
module load 2025 loads EESSI 2025.06.
module load 2024 selects that same stack and is the one you
load before QCG-PilotJob. The names 2024 and
foss/2023a also load the 2025.06 stack on this cluster, so
older scripts keep working.
